of Mat Pilates.
Pilates is among the most popular work out routines of the new century. It attempts to incorporate mind and body into full workout routines that aim to stretch and tone your muscles. While formerly pilates work out routines required extensive use of specialized machinery newer forms of pilates are done without large pieces of equipment. Mat pilates is becoming more and more popular because it can be performed easily at home or at the gym without large machinery. The only mandatory piece of equipment for this type of pilates is a mat that will help provide support and comfort as you complete your routine. Many mat workouts allow you to work at your own pace to stretch and tone your muscles free of the pressure of heavy equipment.
Mat pilates incorporates a number of easy exercises that can be done in any area of the home or gym. The individual can learn a number of routines from a class or even a pilates DVD that can be performed with the mat as the sole piece of equipment. Most mat routines require the individual to lay flat on their back as they stretch the muscles in their legs and abdomen. Other routines require the individual to sit as they stretch upper arms, legs and even chest muscles. Finally when performing pilates with a mat individuals are able to incorporate standing exercises on the mat.
Much like a yoga mat a pilates mat helps individuals stay comfortable as they practice their pilates routine. Some exercises may put stress on certain parts of the body and a mat provides an extra layer for cushioning to protect those areas. Additionally many mats are able to provide support for individuals as they perform mat pilates because often times exercises require a great deal of balance. A pilates mat will provide stability to the individual making it easier for them to focus on their balance and core strength.
