Pilates equipment FAQs
What pieces of equipment do I need to begin learning
yoga?
There are only a few items that are needed to begin practicing yoga.
These are: a mat, a block, and a strap. If you begin learning in a studio,
with a professional, other props will be available to you as needed.
If you are learning at home with a DVD you can purchase additional props,
like a wedge or a ball, as your skills advance.
What is the difference between yoga and pilates?
Yoga and pilates are different forms of exercise that use similar pieces
of equipment. Yoga is an ancient form of meditation that originated
in India. Pilates is a form of exercise and strength training that was
founded in the early 20th century in New York City by Joseph Pilates.
I have an exercise ball; can I use it as a yoga ball?
Usually, yes. An exercise ball is very similar to a yoga ball. Be sure
to check the diameter of the ball and be sure that it is at least 18-30
inches. You also need to make sure that it is in good shape and it can
support your body weight appropriately.
What is a pilates reformer?
A pilates reformer is the same as a pilates machine. It is a large contraption
that is available for use in most pilates studios. The reformer helps
with over 100 pilates movements and exercises.
